Are You Ready to Accelerate?
Force = Mass X Acceleration
This is Newton’s Second Law of Motion. Put one more way, understanding what acceleration is:
F = Mass X Change in Velocity/Change in Time
Virtually every student who takes some sort of physics or at least physical science class learns this simple equation. So much about how the world around us moves can be explained by this simple mathematical law.
It also can explain a lot about how we move through challenges and towards opportunities in our lives.
Aren’t we almost always wishing we could accelerate some change in our lives? Speed up? Sometimes slow down? To do this, a force is needed to make the change. Sometimes it takes an act of God to throw a boulder in our path to get us to change – but it doesn’t have to be this way. We probably just need help from someone else!
What do you want to speed up or slow down in your life?
Accountability Creates Acceleration
Accountability is the the key force that makes change accelerate in our lives.
The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on the role of accountability and goal achievement, and found these results:
The probability of completing a goal if:
- You have an idea or a goal: 10%
- You consciously decide you will do it: 25%
- You decide when you will do it: 40%
- You plan how you will do it: 50%
- You commit to someone you will do it: 65%
- You have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed to: 95%
Ask someone for help. Be accountable. Accelerate.
How to Find an Accountability Partner
People who can be there for you to hold you accountable can take many forms including, but not limited to:
- Mentors at work
Pretty much, anyone you have a relationship that you are able to lean on, be honest with, and where they agree to help hold you to a high standard works.
I may be biased, but one of my personal favorites is investing in a coach of some sort.
Why? Because you are invested in the relationship (often financially), and they are too. They want you to succeed. There is a mutual commitment to the process.
Since starting More Than Engineering, it has been my pleasure to serve hundreds of engineers as a coach to help them reach goals such as new career opportunities, promotions, raises, or developing more positive mindsets.
Sometimes they find that as soon as they invest in themselves, it helps them truly commit to the goal they are trying to achieve.
No matter your goal or challenge, if I can be that accountable force for you, don’t hesitate to reach out!
