“The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity” – Keith Ferrazzi
The perfect place to start doing better in all aspects of our career is where we are right now.
Every day, when we go to work, we often fall into a routine. A routine that focuses only on our bubble of tasks, meetings, and the next thing we know we’re already calling it a day.
Routines are good, but sometimes we get lost in them and we lose touch or miss out on meaningful conversations with mentors and colleagues.
Fortunately, there are always windows of opportunities for you to transform your current work prospects into something great. One key skill to doing that is to learn how to build meaningful networking relationships in your company.
Think of this – you are surrounded by the greatest minds of your chosen industry and you get to learn from their strengths, experiences, and wisdom. What a treat, right? In turn, this will mold you to become the kind of engineer or leader you dream to become.
Here are 3 actions you can take to start building these relationships internally:
- Get curious and ask questions that start with “How?” By doing this, you get a front seat view of your colleagues’ best practices which you can apply in your career as well. You can even learn and enhance new skills that will benefit not only you but those people who will want to learn from you.
- Find ways to connect with others on a more personal level. This is part of finding balance in the workplace. You do not just work and work and work. You can unwind with your colleagues too, and discuss matters that are relevant to your lives such as your families, careers, and your short and long-term goals. You can exchange life experiences and you can encourage one another if one of you goes through a rough patch. These more personal connections can help you create strong bonds with others in your company.
- Be interested in people first. For you to intentionally build your network with meaningful relationships, you must not be completely self-serving. You should also help others succeed and focus on serving others in the organization with your time, skills, and resources. Having successful shared projects will help all of you further your careers and have experiences that bring you together.
