“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” ~Milton Berle
When making a career transition and seeking for that next opportunity, it’s important that you focus and understand what really makes the most difference. There are so many things that people spend WAY too much time focusing on, thinking they are the silver bullet, when in reality they are hardly moving the needle.
Even a great resume won’t get you that interview automatically.
Job fairs can be great, but unless you do something to stand out you’ll just be one of many again.
Online job applications certainly are NOT a winning strategy on their own. Data from Glassdoor tells us that the average corporate job posting gets 250 resumes! So if you are hoping that is going to get you the job on its own, you are most likely mistaken.
The lesson?
People hire people!
To be more successful you need to connect more closely with the people doing the hiring – HR, recruiters, hiring managers, and others internal to the company. If you can get to know them and they can get to know and like you, your chances at having that opportunity are MUCH higher.
Please don’t just take the “easy apply” strategy – you’ll continue to be disappointed in the results.
